"Oh," answered Dan.
The bag full of change lay in his hand; the way the moonlight reflected off its bunched sides kind of entranced him. Maybe they'd need it; he'd gone to the bank earlier that evening, before he'd woken Krissi, but maybe someone else needed it more.
"Thank you, sir, but.." Dan stammered a bit, before continuing, "I mean, I-I....I don't want to take your money or anything..."
He stuffed the slip of paper into his pants pocket, knowing full well he'd never call it. He didn't have a mobile himself, and phones were direct landlines to track him down. Especially since this man was a police constable, there'd be a report out in no time, and their mother would find them.
That is, if she even wanted them back in the first place. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
"Well," began Gilbert.
"Well," answered Drummer.
"Well," said Gilbert again.
"Well," chimed Drummer.
"This is getting no where."
"Well said."
"I mean, really." Gilbert sighed, leaned back in his seat, and ran his fingers through his hair. "We don't have the right case-file, and now we've got three more dead bodies which other inspectors are heading up."
"So? We get a break." Drummer made sure to say 'we', even though they both knew Gilbert was the real detective.
"Well, it's a black mark on our slate, that's what it is. We've an unsolved case."
"Every detective gets one now and then," commented Drummer.
"No, no, I mean, we haven't got a chance to solve it. Someone's deliberately distorting our chances in this inspection."
"Oh?" Drummer smiled sardonically, one eyebrow rising higher than the other. "And do you have a certain 'someone' in mind?"
"Yes," quipped Gilbert, "That Cimmerian fellow."

Kern smiled and shook his head, "no you go ahead and keep it. I don't need it, and I normally use it to give to people that need it more than I do."

"Th-thank you, sir," remarked Daniel Chevalglass.
And that was all he had to say.
The bag of change still in his hand, he turned away from the man and began walking onwards, to what destination, he was unsure. However, he couldn't let the man know that, or he'd be down to the station before one could say 'Jack Robinson', and from there straight back to that dismal flat he'd been incarcerated in for too much of his life.
So he walked deliberately, looking like he knew exactly where he was going, while the moonlight guided his steps and tangled in his hair. ----------------------------------------------------------------
"Cimmerian?" asked Drummer, "You mean that bespectacled fellow in the Autopsy Clinic?"
"The very one," replied Gilbert, "In fact, I'm almost certain."
"How can you be so sure?" questioned the lesser officer, always skeptical but seldom justified. "You've nothing to go on, and.."
"Nothing but my own intuition," shot Gilbert, before leaning forward and continuing with, "Think about it, Max. Who was the last one to handle the files? Who's had access to every single record the station's ever put out on a death? And who deferred us immediately to another source once we mentioned who we were looking for?"
"A score of people," retorted Drummer.
"No, not a score, just one. Just. One." Gilbert stood, collected his coat and billfold, and left a fiver on the table for staying so late. "And it's Cimmerian."
"You're sure? Positively? Without a doubt?"
Gilbert smiled, popped his hat on, and answered, "We'll see, won't we?"

Viola waited by the door to be opened. Aidan always took forever when unlocking it. "Can you hurry up! I think we might be able to get this done."
Aidan finally opened the door and Viola rushed in. She went straight for the computers only to be stopped. She slowly look around the room. Someone had been in hear. Viola couldn't see anything out of place or even that it had been touched, but a feeling nagged at her.

Aidan shook his head and slowly followed her inside. As she rushed into the house he turned around and locked the door behind him. Looking around the main living space, he thought he saw something move. He shook his head and walked into his room where Viola already was in.
Looking around he noticed that the computers where all turned off. "Did we turn these off?"

Viola was pulled out of thought as Aidan walked in. "I don't think we did, Aidan," she whispered. "Something or someone has been in here."
She walked up to the computers, trying to be careful not to touch anything. The dust didn't show any finger prints and nothing had been moved around the computers. Viola kept walking around trying to find something else that should be out of place because no one could keep a place this tidy when they were going through someones stuff, but nothing was out of place. Out of the corner of her eye, she thought she saw something move.

Aidan was examining the laptop, noticing that it hadn't even moved a centimeter. He shook his head with a vacant smile. His father always had said that he was bred for the life of a cop or detective. He chanced a glance at his desk and thought he saw a draw move. Slowly, purposefully he walked towards the drawer he slowly pulled it open and........ nothing. Which was strange because that was the drawer that he kept some of his tools that he used when trying to solve cases.
He looked at Viola for a moment. "Maybe we should grab the laptop and head back over to that coffee shop... I don't think it's safe here anymore." He sat a moment, waiting for Viola's reply.

Viola looked at Aidan for a moment before answering. He was right. It wasn't safe here, but the coffee shop couldn't be anymore safer than his own home. But there will witnesses around if anything happened.
"Yea, I guess you're right," she said a little dazed by the room. "We'll need to grab some paper and pencils, too." She started to grab stuff around Aidan's room hoping to find anything else that they might need.

Aidan nodded and went into his closet (which was always a mess) and pulled out two messenger bags that he always kept on hand. In one he gently placed the laptop, and the folder full of their handwritten autopsies. The other awaited the addition of pens, pencils, and paper. He quickly threw in a handful of pens, two led cartriges, at least a half dozen mechanical pencils, five erasers, ten #2 pencils, two pencil sharpeners, and a baggie to hold pencil shavings.
He looked at Viola to see if she had gotten some paper, and then double checked the room for anything else that might need to get packed into the 'everything' bag. ------- Kern shook his head and began his trek back to the police station. He walked inside, locking the doors behind him. Heading up the stairs to his office, he noticed the silence that seemed to envelope him. Slowly opening the door to the office, he double checked the time-out station. Nope, the allusive secretary was still clocked in.
Taking off his coat and hanging it up he turned around and locked his office door. Suddenly his mind began to put two and two together. He had kept asking for different autopsies from his secretary. She surely must have gone downstairs to the... his eyes widened. Right in front of him was his now prime suspect. Cimmerian.
He shook his head, and quickly pulled out a pad and pen. "Why did you do it?" He wasn't expecting a response, but was hurriedly trying to write that the culprit was Cimmerian. As he wrote the C his air supply was cut off and he began to struggle. The note fell down unseen by any eyes as slowly he fell into unconscieness. His last glimpse before he died was himself... or a dark, shadowy version.
The simple note that he had started lay facedown. The words, "I figured it out... it was C-" laid forlorn as the dirty deed was finished.

Viola put the rest of the supplies in the bag that Aidan was holding. She also made sure that she had a credit card and some cash, just in case. Aidan was giving her a wierd look as she put those in. "What," she asked. "You never know whats going to happen. We might need this."
Viola knew she was right. Something could end up happening to where they needed to get out of there or might need the money for something. Her mom may be horrible at sometimes, but she made good money. Viola had more than necessary on her credit card account.

Daniel Chevalglass was exhausted.
Past exhausted, rather. He was asleep now, curled up in a brighter section of Hyde Park, away from any police constables or neglective mothers searching for neglected children. Krissi had not awaken yet, and this was used to his advantage, he supposed. Of course, he was asleep himself, which definitely prevents any supposing.
The shadows surrounding Hyde Park were whispering amongst themselves, slowly shifting in a sort-of ethereal dance. None of them touched Daniel as they swirled and twisted. Only the moonbeams embraced him, being immediately reflected back into the heavens.
((That's all I have for you. Sorry.))

((It's okay, I understadn that you've been busy... as have I.)) Aidan nodded and slung the heavier messenger bag over his shoulder, the other he offered to Viola. Once all was done he grabbed a few twenties from his jar and off they went. He wasn't really sure where they should go, just someplace safe, maybe surrounded by other people.
Knowing that it would be best to tell his dad where he was going he quickly pulled out his cell and dialed Kern's work number. No one answered the phone and he quickly thought it odd. Hanging up, he dialed his father's cell phone and got the same result. He just shrugged and left a message. The poor guy was probably neck deep in research for the investigation.
"So where to?"

Viola grabbed the extra bag and started for the door. Aidan was trying to get a hold of someone, most likely his dad. So, she waited for him. He seem puzzled about something, but quickly got rid of the emotion.
"So, where to?"
Like she knew where to go. He was the one that thought they should leave. Wait. Weren't they going to go to the Coffee shop?
"Well, I thought we were gonna go back to the coffee shop, but if you want to go somewhere else, thats fine."

Aidan shook his head, "I don't know anymore. We should stop by the department. That way I can make sure my dad knows that we won't be home for a while." He gave her a mishievious grin. "And you could possibly get some more information about the murders."
He actually thought that Viola should be able to do so. After all it was the police department. ((Bum bum buuuuuum! And magically they find a body muhahaha... that I planted :K))

A smile creeped across Viola's face. The department would be a perfect place to go. The possibilities of figuring this out at the department...well you kinda get what she was thinking.
"That's a good idea," she said. "Plus, we can let your dad know that I'm staying with you guys tonight. I don't want to go home to my mom. If it's okay with you."

Aidan nodded, "yeah, it's fine." He looked around the apartment one last time. "Plus there's a coffee shop with free wifi right by it where we can go afterwards." He smiled, he had a feeling that she was ready and excited for the oppurtunity.
"Ready to go?"

((Okay, from here on out, the real scheme is activated. See if you can figure it out!))
Cimmerian was anxious.
He was dead, there was absolutely no doubt about that, but Cimmerian was still skeptical. After all, even a dead body will cast a shadow.
Cimmerian crept closer, as quietly as he could, his darkling eyes peering as intensly as he dared, trying to make out the twisted form of Detective Lankins in the darkened office. Why don't these people ever turn on the lights? It's not some sort of horror film...
Cimmerian answered his own question and criticism by flicking on the switch, immediately perceiving the tangled shred of shadow lying beneath Detective Lankins. He licked his lips, narrowing his eyes, as he shifted slightly forward.
The shadow reacted immediately, detaching from the dead man and circling the room.
Perfect... thought Cimmerian, his own shadowless form still crouching, How am I supposed to get at it now?
The shadow hissed at him, whirling in mid-air, as Cimmerian tried to make a grab for it.
Stay away, shadow-stealer, it nearly screamed in the tongue of the shadows.
"Why on earth should I?" snapped Timothy Cimmerian. "I didn't kill him, but that doesn't mean I can't have his shadow!"
I killed him, I killed him, I killed him, whispered the shadow joyfully, I killed him for Penumbra.
"Penumbra?" Cimmerian's mind reeled. Who was Penumbra, or what was he?
Penumbra, Penumbra, Penumbra, shrieked the shadow of Lankins, I answer to Penumbra!
"Who's Penumbra?"
The shadow whirled past him before he could react, rushing through the hall and out of the main office of the Scotland Yard, leaving Cimmerian disheveled, confused, and wondering. Who was Penumbra?

Viola smiled and grabbed onto Aidan's hand. She started to drag him out of the door. She waited for him to shut and lock the door, making sure that no one could get in. She quickly took the key out of his hand and hid it in the usualy place.
As she turned around to make sure that they had everything, she noticed that she still had a hold of his hand. Viola smiled and slowly let go of his hand. "Do we have everything?"

Aidan shook his head, "well hopefully I do, cause it would be a pain to go back inside." He looked around, "well better get going." He started to walk towards the elevator, but something deep inside his gut told him to not go. We started towards the stairs, not wanting to be left inside a small, cramped elevator.

Viola followed after Aidan. A weird feeling started to overcome her as they approached the elevator. She looked at Aidan and they both started to head for the stairs at the same time.
Weird things were happening as they headed for the stairs. Shadows seemed to be moving around them as they walked. Viola felt like she was being watched. Shivers ran through her body. Just ignore it.
