"Wait!" Wilhelm shouted out just as the men were about to leave. "Brother," he began, looking equally genuinely at Alaric, the boy he knew to be his brother. "I saw some people in the forest as we were walking through. They were heading due south."

Alaric tried not to let his alarm show as the men turned around. He could not believe that the boy had done and said something that contradicted what he had said. "Wilhelm, why did you not mention anything earlier? They could have gone around to attack us."

Wilhelm glanced with desperation to Alaric's eyes. He was trying to get the men not only off their trail, but off the trail of the people Alaric had been with. His older brother obviously cared for all the people there, and Wilhelm just wanted to help.
"I thought... I thought they were a part of the guards."

Alaric nodded, trying to keep up, though he felt bad for he knew that Wilhelm was second guessing himself. "It's alright Wilhelm." He looked up at the guards. "Do you think that they would attack our family?"
The guards shook their heads and the leader spoke once again. "No, they've been too self-righteous, but I wouldn't put it past them to hid at your home. We'll go after them, and you boys best be on your way home." Alaric nodded as the guards started to cross the creek to head south.

Wilhelm frowned as they left, looking down at the ground and shuffling his feet. "I'm sorry..." he whispered when the men were out of sight.

Alaric shook his head and managed a smile. "It's okay. You were trying to help." He let out another deep breath as they started to back track to where their original meeting place had been. That way Wilhelm, could lead the way to his house.

Wilhelm followed.

Slowly and cautiously they made it to the tree. "Okay Wilhelm, you will have to lead the way from here to your home. I'll still make sure that you are safe on the way."

"We're going home?" Wilhelm asked, his eyes sparkling. "You can see mother!"

Alaric shook his head, "My mission is to see you to your house safely. Then I must return to the camp and help them out." He did not add that was only for the best case scenario. The worst case scenario would cause him to stay longer and keep Wilhelm safe for the remainder of the time.

Wilhelm frowned, taking Alaric's hand in his as a brother would do. "Please. You must see mother. She'll be able to tell if you're really my brother or not."

Alaric looked at the boy for a moment, "And what would that prove? I would still be going back to fight. If I am your brother, then it would only cause your mother to worry more. And then if I were to die, she would loose a son twice in a row. Wouldn't it be more kind to her to not bring in even more strief?" He felt that he was being cruel, but perhaps cruel is what Wilhelm needed.

"No!" Wilhelm's voice broke. "It'll bring her hope to see you again! Do you know how much ehartache she's gone through since you disappeared four years ago? We miss you, Alaric! ...You... You have to come back."

Alaric could feel a pain in his chest, he couldn't figure out what to do. This instance had never happened to him. And now, he had no clue what to do. Silently in his head he cursed Todd, for he figured his commander knew that this would happen and what strain it would put on him. Perhaps the man whom had taken care of Alaric since he was discovered just wanted to give him a chance at discovering who he really was. Or maybe Alaric was just reading too deeply into this.

Wilhelm frowned as Alaric was silent, looking from one of the other boy's irises to the other in hopes he would agree to come see their mother. She had been longing, hurt, to see her oldest son again, and since the chance had arisen that that was possible, Wilhelm couldn't pass that up.
"Please..." he whispered again, his eyes falling to the ground.

Alaric took a deep breath and tried to calm his mind. He needed to figure out what to do... "I don't know Wilhelm... give me time to think."

Wilhelm nodded, glancing over to the way he knew they would be walking to get home. It wasn't very far, and if he looked long enough, he was sure he would be able to find the smoke rising up into the air from their chimney.

Alaric tried to smile, "I guess we best be heading out, eh?" He glanced in the direction that Wilhelm was staring off in. "So is that the direction we will be taking?"

He nodded again, this time his eyes snapping back to his brother's. "Yes. It's not very far. We should be there within a half an hour," he replied.

Alaric nodded, already calculating the hour and so it would take for him to take Wilhelm home and then trek back and help the others.
