The somber parade, a presentation hailing Death, passed him by.
Dierdan kept his head down, pressed as far as he could into his chest, so that no one would recognize his young, boyish mug and possibly trace him back to Master Bargoth. Tracing anybody anywhere was quite out of the question, as far as he was concerned....
The melancholy procession paid him no heed (Perfect, thought Dierdan), and, this close encounter now passing him by, he turned swiftly away and trotted down the path, back to the now-struck-silent village.
"Oy...." whispered Dierdan, lest any undesirable ears should overhear, "You ain't jus' gonna sit there, me wis?"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Let's ditch the fool and be done with it..."
"Hush up, you ass, or you'll give yourself away!"
"If you haven't noticed, I'm currently a horse, and there is a significant difference..."
"That doesn't make any difference, shut up."
The horse flared its nostrils and shied away, contemptibly, as one bright green eye looked on disdainfully. "You're not letting me have any fun whatsoever...."
"That's because, right now, you're supposed to be a stupid beast of burden..."
Kervin the Changeling stuck his tongue out at his spectre friend, which is an extremely un-horse-like action. The spectre narrowed his own eyes scornfully, letting out his breath in a single, irritated snort, but, knowing that a fight with the Changeling could never be won, he turned from his vexatious friend and back towards his prisoner.
"Step lively, now," barked the soldier, "You have an appointment with Death we don't want you to miss...."
